What you see is Perennial Rye Grass. Underneath it is a strain of Bermuda called Bob Sod (it's dormant until May). The Perennial Rye will grow until May, the desert heat will kill it, and the Bermuda will come out of hibernation and live in the heat. If you don't plant the Perennial Rye in the fall, you'll will have a yellow, dead-looking lawn, which is actually the dormant Bermuda. This is called a winter lawn. It will come back to life in May.
The sod is sold in 2' x 4' rolls. The yard took 180 rolls....
